Awa Odori or Awa dance festival is one of hundreds of
Japanese festivals and event held in this rather small but ancient land, the
land of the shining sun. The Awa dance festival is a huge dance carnival, huge
as a city-wide huge in Tokushima, Shikoku Island which brings more than 1.3
million visitors each year to watch and enjoy this event.
The dancers wear colorful and traditional customs, dance the
traditional synchronized dance and play shamisens, gongs, taiko drums and
flutes. This traditional festival that has hundreds of year’s history, begins
on 12 August till 15 August and it is a part of a bigger festival Named Obon festival.
Awa odori is the largest dance festival in Japan and the big group dances march
on streets doing choreographed dances with the musicians called “ren”.
There are different kind of dance from day to night the dance in
the day is called “Nagashi” which is elegant and sophisticated with a usually a
story to tell. The night time dance is called “Zomeki” which is more energetic
and emotional and visitors are encouraged to join and enjoy the dance
themselves.
